Our Position in Detail
Our Mission: To work for the betterment of Ohio University through the protection of Faculty rights and responsibilities, thereby promoting the best possible learning environment for our students and best possible working environment for the faculty.
Goals:
-
Ensure effective faculty participation in decisions that affect OU and its academic mission
- Protect the rights of faculty as written in the Faculty Handbook
- Protect against the erosion of faculty health care benefits
- Negotiate competitive faculty salaries protected by multi-year contracts
Specific Objectives:
-
To negotiate faculty representation at full Trustee meetings; to require regular meetings between the President, Faculty Senate leaders and an OU-AAUP representative; to follow AAUP guidelines regarding faculty participation in search and evaluation committees for senior administrators.
- To hold as law the resolutions passed by Faculty Senate and signed by the Provost and/or President; to require binding arbitration in the event that policies of the Faculty Handbook are not followed and can not be resolved through fruitful discussions.
- To negotiate health care benefits to the best extent possible within budget constraints; to roll over unspent health care funds at the end of each fiscal year as opposed to the current policy of returning this money to the university’s general fund; to link health benefits together with faculty salaries to negotiate a balanced plan that represents the interests of the faculty; to negotiate for better parental leave and family care policies.
- To negotiate salary increases that preserve Ohio University’s place in the upper quartile of peer universities in the State of Ohio; to allow cost of living salary adjustments along with salary increases based on merit as determined at the department or unit level; to allow for adjustments to keep outstanding faculty and prevent salary compression; to prevent reductions to the percentage of the overall budget devoted to faculty salaries; to reverse the loss of faculty positions that has occurred over past years.
